Abstract

Several authors have studied the properties of resonators with radially varying gain in parabolic approximation introducing complex-valued ABCD matrix elements. According to this theory even small effects or large pump beam sizes should cause even strongly geometrical unstable resonators to become stable against perturbations with confined modes.1 However, the parabolic approximation yields an overestimation of the gain guiding effect and gives no direct information whether a mode for a given cavity design can be generated or not.
