Abstract
Ytterbium-doped crystals hat e emerged recently as impressive solid state laser media emitting in the 1 μm region. The apatite structure S-FAP serves as an excellent host for the Yb3+ ion. Recently. Yb3+:S-FAP has been pumped by a Ti:sapphire laser [1], a Cr:LiSAF laser [2] and a pulsed diode laser [3] generating l.047 μm. However, due to its long storage lifetime of 1.26 ms, small quantum defect and absorption linewidth. Yb3+:S-FAP is ideally suited to CW diode pumping.
