Abstract

Intracore fiber Bragg grating are suitable for strain sensing in smart structures because they can be easily incorporated into complex structures such as composites without compromising the integrity of the material. These gratings reflect a very narrow linewidth light signal at a wavelength determined from the grating period and the effective index of the fiber core. When a stretch is imposed on a fiber grating, the peak wavelength moves towards higher values. High resolution in measuring the Bragg wavelength is required over a wide range in order to interrogate wavelength multiplexed sensors in a single optical fiber.
