Residual fluorescence anisotropy: A probe of two photon excitation with resonance energy migration

Abstract

Recent studies of resonance energy transfer have extended the early works of Perrin and Galanin to include, not only the residual anisotropy following near zone Förster-type energy transfer, but also the retardation effects manifest in the long range radiative results [1,2]. In this paper we report new theoretical results for two photon fluorescence migration in a two-component system, determining the residual fluorescence anisotropy at both the long and short range asymptotes. In employing a two level approximation for the polar centre we are able to obtain tractable results for the fluorescence anisotropy ratios, in a form that resembles Perrin’s (single centre) result.
