Abstract
Before addressing the recent advances in high power infrared gas lasers a general attempt is untertaken to describe the upcoming competing situation between gas lasers on one hand and solid state and semiconductor lasers on the other. Although all solid state coherent light sources show undoubtfully many attractive features, gas lasers still dominate when it comes to very high powers, high beam quality, and high coherence properties.
