Abstract

In recent years, there has been much interest in short optical pulse generation by diode lasers, particularly in optical communication and signal processing systems, where high repetition rates of over 100 GHz can readily be achieved. However, as diode lasers have been developed with greater optical powers over a wider range of wavelengths, further applications for short pulse generation have been recognized in optical sensing and rangefinding, optical pumping, frequency conversion and spectroscopy.
