Abstract

During the past two decades, crystal fibres of many materials have been produced by the Laser Heated Miniature Pedestal Growth technique for a very wide range of applications This paper describes altering the refractive index of lithium niobate fibres by the out-diffusion of lithium oxide [1] to obtain fibres with radial extraordinary refractive index gradients. They have potential uses in sensing, sample excitation and as miniature in-line polarisers.
