Abstract
By placing the active layers of a LED into a microcavity, the spontaneous emission in the direction perpendicular to the mirrors of the cavity can be much enhanced, leading to a much higher efficiency, better spectral purity and a narrower beam emission profile compared to classical LEDs. The principle of microcavity-LEDs and experimental results on GaAs-based and InP-based microcavity-LEDs will be presented.
