Microlasers based on molecular sieves

Abstract

Recently we demonstrated lasing in microlasers in which dyes were incapsulated as guests in the channellike nanopores of the crystalline molecular sieve host AIPO4-5 [1]. In this kind of structures lasing occurs hi a whispering gallery mode which is formed by total internal reflection at the hexagonal sides of the molecular sieve crystal. In lasers with a resonator size characterized by its width over flats of WoF > 5µm we observed multimode emission. On the other hand, single mode emission was obtained in cavities with WoF < 5µm. In these cavities the mode spacing is around 25 nm so that only one resonator mode interacts with the gain width of the dye medium. In Fig. 1 we compare the differential efficiency behavior of a typical microlaser with a width over flats of WoF < 5µm with one of WoF > 5µm.
