Abstract

Second harmonic generation (SHG) from diode laser sources working at low power is of particular interest since compact all-solid-state devices in the visible range can be produced. The new nonlinear Ca4GdO (BO3)3 (GdCOB) material presents very attractive properties. It particularly has suitable substitution sites for rare-earth ions (Yd3+ and Nd3+). Therefore, infrared laser emission of the optically active ions can be combined with the second harmonic generation properties of the host to obtain self-frequency conversion [1]. Second harmonic generation (SHG) within waveguides greatly increases the efficiency of non-linear optical interaction. In this prospect, we recently demonstrated for the first time SHG in He+- implanted GdCOB planar waveguides [2].
