High-efficiency 880nm diode direct-pumping of Nd:YVO4 grazing incidence oscillators

Abstract

Potentially, direct pumping to the upper lasing level should be the most efficient “four level laser” pumping scheme, because it reduces to a minimum Stokes factor losses, and eliminates quantum efficiency loss. Recently we showed the efficiency benefits of direct pumping from the ground state (Nd:YAG and Nd:YVO4),(1) and from thermally excited ground levels (Nd:YAG),(2) to the upper lasing level, over “traditional” 808nm pump band excitation. In those experiments, the pump source was a tunable Ti:Sapphire CW laser.
