Abstract

First industrial developments of polymer-based devices were based on the thermo-optical effect entailing drastic bandwidth reduction down to 50Hz. However, electro-optic polymers experienced a significant upsurge over the last years and their perspectives are now fast maturing with noteworthy progress in high frequency modulation and lowering of both driving voltage and insertion losses. We present here a 1 × 2 switch based on an amplitude modulator combined with an asymmetric X junction at its output. The device exploits the mode evolution tailored modal evolution to avoid precise control of the refractive index and of the waveguide dimensions.
