Abstract

We introduce a model suitable for the description of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) in presence of an absorbing region assuming single-mode operation. The model takes into account the polarization degrees of freedom, within the Spin-Flip Model [1], while the pumped and absorbing regions are modeled as two different carrier reservoirs coupled by diffusion processes and by the field distribution across the device. In this framework, we investigate the mechanisms of self-pulsations induced by the absorbing region and the role of the polarization in these phenomena.
