Abstract
Thermal loading in solid-state lasers limits the maximum output power that can be extracted in fundamental mode (TEM00) operation. The fundamental mode is desired in many applications. However, due to thermal birefringence the linear polarization is converted into an elliptically polarized beam inside the cavity. Thus the beam is distorted.
