Abstract

Practical quantum key distribution [QKD] involves the use of existing technology to distribute a key that is secure against an eavesdropping attack using superior technology. Some of the imperfections of existing signal sources and receivers put severe restrictions on the secure bit rate and distance over which a secure key can be established. The corresponding conservative security proof can be established for an eavesdropper limited only by the rules of quantum mechanics. [Mayers, Inamori] Note that the availability of technology that matches the conservative security condition has been demonstrated by many groups.
