Abstract
In the context of high power laser research and development, the term “power scaling” is very often used. Surprisingly, however, there appears to be no consensus or even detailed suggestion concerning how the general concept of scalability should be applied in this technical area. Correspondingly, the terms “scalability” and “power scaling” are often used in a vague or even meaningless manner. Clarifying such issues does not only increase precision, but can create a lot of important insight.
