Tunable CW laser operation of Tm3+ in locally disordered NaLa(W04)2

Abstract

Recently laser operation of Tm3+ was achieved in NaGd(W04)2 [1,2], a crystal with local disorder and 14 space symmetry, the first representative of a large class of tetragonal double tungstates and molybdates with nominal formula MT(X04)2, where M and T are monovalent and trivalent cations respectively, and X=W or Mo. These compounds are characterized by random distribution of M and T cations on the same lattice sites. Ln3+ dopant ions replacing T cations of the host experience a crystal field distribution, and the optical absorption and photoluminescence bands exhibit substantial inhomogeneous broadening. We report now on lasing of Tm3+ in the isostructural host NaLa(W04)2, shortly NaLaW, which was grown for the present work by the Czochralski method, with 5 mol % Tm substitution in the melt.
