Abstract
Quantum cascade lasers (QC) are unipolar semiconductor injection lasers that can cover the mid-infrared (3 μm< λ <24 μm) and THz (70 μm < λ < 200 μm) spectral ranges. Thanks to their good performance, they are now used as laser sources in conventional spectroscopic setups for gas detection. The possibility of implementing surface-sensitive quantum cascade lasers is an alternative intriguing approach. If the device is conceived to let an evanescent electric field leak from the device surface, it can react to a material deposited on the top surface, for instance by detuning its emission wavelength.
