Stabilisation of a Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser using an intra-cavity high-reflectivity grating

Abstract

A large number of applications, including spectroscopy, metrology, nonlinear frequency conversion and fibre optic communications, require laser sources with stable polarisation and single spatial and longitudinal mode output. Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VECSELs) are increasingly recognised as attractive diode-pumped solid-state lasers for these and other requirements, because of their wavelength versatility and cavity-controlled high- power and high-quality beam operation. To-date, high-power (>100mW) narrow-linewidth operation of VECSELs has been obtained by using intra-cavity birefringent filters, volume Bragg gratings (VBG’s) or by exploiting the Fabry- Perot characteristics of a thin intracavity heatspreader. Here, we present a novel and attractive alternative method to stabilise the emission of a 1063mn VECSEL, by inserting inside the cavity a high-reflectivity grating. It offers high- power perfonnance, wavelength-tunability and polarization control.
