Tailoring strong cw supercontinuum generation in microstructured fibers with two-zero dispersion wavelengths

Abstract

Supercontinuum (SC) generation with high Power Spectral Densities (PSD) is of great interest for many applications. Although pulsed lasers allow the achievement of broadest SCs [1], their PSD are lower than the one of SC generated with CW lasers. First experimental results were obtained with CW Raman fiber lasers launched in telecommunication fibers [1]. Recently, Travers et al. demonstarted that Yb fiber lasers and Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCF) also allows the generation of strong SCs. This last setup is very promising since Yb fiber lasers are powerful compared with Raman fiber lasers, but a large part of the pump power injected in the fiber is lost during the propagation in the fiber due to the high absorption of the OH peak. Indeed, Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) is the main nonlinear process involved in the SC generation and fiber length of 100-200 m is required. We demonstrate that by choosing modulationnal instability and associated Dispersive Waves (DW) process rather than SRS only tens of meters of fiber is required and as a consequence, most of the injected pump power is transfered into the SC. This choice is obtained by properly tailoring the dispersion of the PCF.
