Mechanisms of waveguiding in femtosecond laser-structured LiNbO3

Abstract

Optical waveguides have been fabricated in a variety of transparent materials (mainly glasses) using focussed femtosecond laser pulses. This technology has been used to inscribe three-dimensional photonic structures like waveguide arrays or splitters. Recently, lithium niobate (LiNbO3) has gained special attention because of its outstanding nonlinear and electrooptic properties. Although the fabrication of waveguides with ultrashort laser pulses has been demonstrated, no detailed understanding of the guiding properties exists to date.
