Abstract

Optical amplifiers have greatly contributed to the successful deployment of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) are common as compensators and filters in high density WDM systems. FBG are also used to achieve automatic gain control in optical amplifiers through gain clamping, which will maintain the gain constant over a large input power range [1], In this process, the internal laser power is used as a reservoir of optical energy which extends the linear gain region. When the laser energy is consumed, the internal laser is disabled, resulting in behaviour similar to an optical NOT gate [2], In this work an experimental FBG gain clamped semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is implemented in characterized.
