Generation of widely tunable optical solitons in the infrared range by using dispersion decreasing fibers

Abstract

Wavelength tunable ultrashot pulse sources are important devices in the fields of high-speed optical communication, ultrafast optoelectronics, and coherent terahertz spectroscopy. Recently, we have successfully demonstrated a compact system of wavelength tunable femtosecond (fs) soliton pulse generation using optical fibers and fiber laser. In this system, an approximately 90 fs ideal soliton pulse is generated at a wavelength from 1.57 to 2 µm. Since the optical wavelength can be changed continuously only by varying the fiber input power, and the output pulse is stable, this system is very practical as a wavelength tunable light source. For application to optical communication and optoelectronics, it is important to advance the wavelength tuning range below 1.55 µm.
