Abstract

Phosphate glasses are versatile and high performance host materials for the development of compact fibre and waveguide lasing and amplification components of high output. Phosphate glasses provide great solubility of rare earth ions allowing high concentration doping without increase of quenching and reduction of emission lifetimes. The photosensitivity of phosphate glasses has only recently been investigated using 248nm [1] and 193nm [2] nanosecond laser radiation, leading to index changes in the range of l0−4and l0−5.
