Charged nano-particles generated at ablation in air and their role in pulsed microdrilling

Abstract

It is commonly assumed that ablated material is completely removed from the exposed area. We show that a large portion of it forms a cloud of small particles long time residing in surrounding atmosphere. The cloud can effect ablation by following laser pulses introducing low-threshold plasma ignition [1]. The resulting plasma screening is especially pronounced in long channels, where convection is poor and retardation of drilling rates reaches two orders of magnitude.
