Broadband Chaos Generation by Semiconductor Lasers Subject to Bright and Dark Optical Comb Injections

Abstract

Broadband random signal generations using nonlinear laser dynamics have been widely studied [1]. For potential applications such as spread-spectrum communication and ultra wideband ranging [2,3], signals with bandwidths as broad as possible are required. To enhance the bandwidth of laser chaos, schemes combining optical injection with either optical feedback or optoelectronic feedback have been proposed [1,4]. While the bandwidth of the chaos state is generally broader at a higher injection level, a reversed period-doubling bifurcation route out of chaos could happen under strong injection [5]. Therefore, a perturbation scheme that generates chaos at a high injection level is often desired.
