Abstract
The demand for greater power from fibre lasers has led to an increasing trend towards large mode area (LMA) fibres to counter unwanted nonlinear effects and improve system efficiency. The increase in effective core diameter occurs at the expense of strictly single-mode operation and can have a deleterious impact on beam quality and stability.
