Abstract

There is intense current interest in integrating excitons and plasmons in waveguide structures with specific functionalities. We have studied the coupling of band-edge and donor-acceptor pair (DAP) photoluminescence (PL) to propagating and localized surface plasmons in sub-micron scale waveguide structures. By varying the thickness of a spacer layer between the ZnO luminescent centers and nanostructured plasmonic thin films, we verified that Purcell enhancement of the ultraviolet ZnO band-edge emission opccurred by coupling to Ag and Au surface plasmon polaritons. On the other hand, enhanced DAP photoluminescence appears to result from dipole-dipole scattering by localized surface plasmons in nanoparticulate films.
