Abstract
The terahertz (THz) spectral region is very attractive for applications such as real-time imaging, heterodyne detection or spectroscopy. The preferred, monolithic sources are quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs). The emission frequency can be tuned easily to the required one due to the designable gain. However, the inhomogeneous gain broadening with a typical full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of 130 GHz [1] leads to a multi-mode emission. For a precise frequency control two-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) based on isolated pillars are the ideal solution. The designable dispersion of the PhCs and the predicted gain enhancement [2] allows for versatile devices [3,4].
