Statistical design in integrated optics

Abstract

As the technological evolution is bringing the integrated optical circuits towards the high contrast VLSI concept, simulators and CAD tools have to adapt to the investigation of large circuits including several functionalities. Not in alternative but in addition to electromagnetic simulators, circuit simulators, based on models of the circuit building blocks can give a great help in this direction. A 'model' is a mathematical representation of the functionality, often in the form of scattering matrices, rather than a precise description of the physical processes occurring inside the device.
