Metrological validation of photodetectors by using a single photon source based on NV-centers in diamond

Abstract

The needs of quantum cryptography and quantum computing belong to the driving forces behind the rapid advances in optical communication technology. This requires optical sources producing single photons either 'on demand' or 'heralded'. Recently several sources were developed like trapped ions in cavities, parametric down-conversion, surface acoustic waves as well as the emission from molecules, quantum dots or NV-centers in a diamond [1]. Photodetection performs an important but also critical role in assessing and calibrating different single photon sources. Therefore, validation of the measurement equipment is one precursor to further metrological characterisation and development of quantum technology.
