Conical refraction: Beam evolution

Abstract

It has been known for almost 200 years that a biaxial crystal will conically refract an incident beam when the beam is aligned precisely along an optic axis of the crystal. Since then this effect has been mostly treated as an optical curiosity and has never found practical application.
