Adapted AWG Design for Localised Spectroscopic Measurements

Abstract

In previous work [1,2], we have demonstrated an integrated microspectrometer with an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device for fluorescence based analysis in a microfluidic format. Here, we describes an adapted AWG design with focusing properties, which may be utilised for localised spectroscopic measurements such as flow cytometry and single cell analysis. Figure 1(a) shows the integration between AWG device and microfluidic chip and lens curvatures were incorporated into the ends of the integrated waveguides [see (II) in Figure 1(b)]. The controllable focusing properties were evaluated by fluorescence measurements, enabling to probe smaller sample volumes compared to conventional design in (I) of Figure 1(b).
