Abstract

Next generation of defence systems, industrial material processing and environmental sensing applications will require laser systems of increased efficiency, brightness and extended wavelength range. For current laser technologies, it is challenging to maintain the beam quality of a single laser at elevated power levels. Coherent beam combining offers high quality beams as well as high powers but requires exact sub-wavelength phase control and path length matching to the micron level accuracy (e.g., [1]). In Raman beam combining, the phase control is automatically achieved through the non-linear interaction, leading to a technique with fewer constraints on pump coherence and striking advantages in terms of simplicity and scalability [2,3].
