Polarization Conversion in Diamond Raman Lasers

Abstract

Although polarized light is desired in numerous applications, many laser platforms generate unpolarized or depolarized radiation at high power levels. Thermal effects in solid-state laser technology, for example, can result in undesirable depolarized output [1]. Extra-cavity polarizers achieve polarized output but with 100% loss of the orthogonal component. The Raman polarizability of diamond, which comprises of three degenerate Raman modes based on F2g symmetry, provides the possibility to convert an unpolarized pump to polarized Stokes beam in an external-cavity Raman laser and thus achieve much greater efficiency of conversion.
