Abstract

High beam quality and high average power picosecond lasers have been intensely studied in a variety of fields, such as laser ablation, micro-fabrication, and nonlinear frequency extension. Side-pumped neodymium doped vanadate slab amplifiers, in which high inversion population at high density is produced near a pump face arising from a strong absorption for diode wavelength and large stimulated emission cross-section, enable us to achieve ultra-high (>1,000 times) single-pass gain without use of a regenerative amplifier configuration, and they have been successfully demonstrated to develop the high average power picosecond lasers, so far [1, 2].
