Abstract
High-energy Ho:YLF regenerative amplifiers (RA) are promising candidates to pump mid-IR optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) [1,2] but are highly susceptible to severe pulse instabilities due to bifurcation. The origin of these instabilities is a perturbed equilibrium of the inversion level for consecutive pump and amplification cycles [3]. Bifurcation instability is an intrinsic property of RAs and occurs even in the absence of pump and seed noise. It results in an intracavity energy enhancement, which consequently limits the maximum energy extraction due to possible damage on optical components. Furthermore, it prevents low-noise operation crucial for pumping OPAs and other non-linear processes.
