Abstract

Laser emission at ~2 μm related to the 3F43H6 transition in Tm3+ ions is of practical interest for medicine, atmospheric sensing and pumping of mid-IR optical parametric oscillators. One of the most suitable hosts for thulium doping is potassium lutetium tungstate, KLu(WO4)2 or KLuW. Tm:KLuW crystals are known for their beneficial spectroscopic properties, resulting in efficient diode-pumped lasers tunable from 1.80 to 1.98 μm. We are interested in microchip laser designs where two flat mirrors are attached to the crystal surfaces. Such lasers are compact, insensitive to misalignment and possess low losses. Here, we report on the first Yb,Tm:KLuW continuous-wave (CW) microchip laser.
