Abstract
Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) is a class of extreme uniaxial media with the different signs of the principal dielectric constants, [ε] = diag(ε, ε, εz) [1]. Consequently, the dispersion of the metamaterial is a hyperboloid that supports unbounded wavevectors. Since the photonic density of states (PDOS) is proportional to the volume enclosed between two isofrequency contours in the k-space [2], an HMM can provide a coupled emitter with a nearly infinite, broadband set of additional decay channels which could drastically enhance an emitter’s spontaneous rate [3–4].
