Generation of broadband femtosecond mid-IR pulses in long KTA OPA in the vicinity of the edge of transparency

Abstract

Looking for broadband OPA in 4-5 μm range, we have noticed, that in the vicinity of IR absorption band of nonlinear crystal, the bandwidth of OPA may be as large as for degeneracy. This situation is realized for such effective nonlinear crystals as KTA (and its isomorphs), LiNbO3, LiIO3 and can be explained as modification of refractive index of nonlinear crystal by edge absorption, that, in turn, may led to near zero group-velocity mismatch between signal and idler femtosecond pulses in that wavelength range.
