Abstract

Optomechanical system have first appeared in the context of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors where quantum effects must be taken into account to reach the sensitivity required to observe such astrophysical events. From this starting point several mechanical resonators and optical cavities, involving wide range of sizes and materials, have been developed to reach the level of quantum effects. To overcome the prominent dissipation sources, mechanical quality factor and finesse of the optical cavity have been widely increased. Over the past ten years, applications spread out of the gravitational-wave field, leading to the coupling of such quantum mechanical systems to well controlled quantum systems such as atomic clouds, or Josephson circuits [1].
