Abstract
Measurement of sub-surface water temperature and salinity is important in fields including climate change research, oceanography, defence and ecology. Yet there is an absence of methods for profiling temperature and salinity, short of deploying physical sensors. The overall goal of our project is to develop an active remote sensing approach to this problem which is capable of monitoring temperature and salinity in near-real-time. In this paper we will describe the principles behind the measurement, present spectral analysis that uncovers the parameters which are most sensitive to changes in water temperature and salinity, and outline the design of a simple optical system for temperature sensing which is being evaluated in field trials in Sydney Harbour.
