Abstract
Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) resonances have been demonstrated to be an excellent tool to measure small variations of different magnitudes in a microresonator, such as temperature or refractive index [1,2], due to their high sensitivity to small variations of such parameters. In this paper we show the experimental measurement of the temperature profile of a FBG which is induced by a medium power optical signal propagating through the grating itself. In our experiments, the maximum temperature variation along the FBG is less than 8 ºC and the changes are not homogeneous along the length of the grating. The technique we present here allows measuring temperature variations lower than 0.06 ºC and provides the ability to determine how they distribute along the fiber.
