Abstract

All optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) would be required to improve the flexibility of conventional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. In addition, the data carrying capacity of lightwave communication systems can be increased by a factor of 6 over traditional on-off keyed transmission by employing signals with 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) format. Four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) is the best candidate to perform wavelength conversion of signals with advanced modulation formats such as 16- and 64-QAM [1,2] due to: transparency to modulation format [1,2] and transparency to baud rate [3].
