Abstract

Fiber based Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) systems are well established as ns pulse sources offering independent tuning of pulse duration, shape and pulse repetition frequency. The pulse energy scaling in such systems is limited by nonlinearities such as SBS and SRS and by the low saturation energy (Esat) in fibers. Fabry-Perot laser diodes have shown unpredictable laser spectra [1] leading to low SBS thresholds. Recently a MOPA seeded by a broad band (10nm) Super Luminescent Diode (SLD) has produced a record pulse energy [2].
