Harnessing guided mode resonances in a one-dimensional grating for graphene-based absorbers

Abstract

Graphene is a bi-dimensional material that offers unique and exceptional physical, chemical and optical properties. Graphene is highly transparent in the visible and near-infrared spectra (VIS-NIR) due to its atomic thickness equal to about 0.34 nm [1]. Its absorption is independent on the material parameters since it only related to the fundamental constants leading to an absorbance equal to about 2.3% across the VIS range [1]. This value can be extremely boosted or enhanced by introducing the monolayer graphene in a resonant structure that foster a strong interaction between photons and the bi-dimensional material [2].
