Rare-earth thermometry using functionalised optical fibre tips for in vivo measurements of brain temperature

Abstract

Optical fibre temperature sensors present an attractive alternative to traditional measurement techniques as their small size, inert material compositions, low thermal conductivity and immunity to electrical interference enables their use in regions in which it would be difficult or impossible to obtain measurements with conventional methods. Increases in brain temperature following 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methyl amphetamine (MDMA; ecstasy) exposure cause highly detrimental neurotoxicological events. [1] Yet the hyperthermia experienced by susceptible brain nuclei has yet to be quantified in the behaving ambulatory animal.
