Abstract

Laser array research has predominantly focused on arrays of VCSELs because of several beneficial features, most notably their integrability into electronic systems [1]. Single-chip VECSEL arrays have also been demonstrated, using a method similar to what is presented here [2]. Non-semiconductor laser arrays, however, have received very little attention in comparison. Fiber arrays face scaling difficulties because each array element is a separate gain medium that requires alignment, while other solid-state arrays have so far required pumping with a VCSEL array to achieve multiple beams [3]. We have demonstrated the first many-beam, solid-state laser array, with the specific advantages of using a single gain medium and pump beam. The configuration is easy to align, uses a straightforward method of scaling the array size and power, and can utilize gain media that have not been previously considered for laser arrays.
