Abstract
It is well known that the efficiency of 9xx nm pumped Er3+-doped fibre amplifiers can be enhanced by an Yb3+-codoping, in particular since the absorption cross-section and the maximum doping concentration of Yb3+ are significantly larger than those of Er3+ [1]. However, if the underlying dipole-dipole interaction, a Förster resonance, is taken into account, the common fixed rate modelling [2] of the Yb3+-to-Er3+ energy transfer in the rate equations of Er3+:Yb3+-codoped fibre amplifiers is inconsistent for several reasons.
