Abstract

Lutetium aluminium garnet, Lu3Al5O12 (shortly LuAG) is a well-known cubic host crystal for doping with rare-earth ions and, in particular, Ytterbium (Yb3+) ones. As compared to its yttrium counterpart, Y3Al5O12 (YAG), it offers a weaker dependence of the thermal conductivity on the Yb3+ doping level. LuAG is also very suitable for the fabrication of transparent ceramics which may compete against crystals in terms of size-scalable production while maintaining good optical quality and similar spectroscopic properties of the rare-earth ions [1]. Yb:LuAG ceramics have been recognized as suitable gain materials for power-scalable lasers, including those based on the thin-disk technology [2].
